New Zealand Adventure Activities Certification (NZAAC) Scheme

The Scheme was developed by WorkSafe New Zealand and JAS-ANZ to provide a framework for the safe operation of some adventure activities in New Zealand. The scheme is based on the certification of operators to the Safety Audit Standard for Adventure Activities: Requirements for a Safety Audit of Operators.

The Health and Safety in Employment (Adventure Activity) Regulations 2011 (promulgated under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992) require commercial operators who provide adventure activities, as defined by the Regulations, to pass safety audits and become registered by WorkSafe New Zealand.  The certification body is engaged directly by the operator. The scheme is only accessible to adventure activity operators who are required to hold such registration.

Applicant CABs will need to comply with:

  • ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 – Conformity Assessment – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems; and
  • New Zealand Adventure Activities Certification Scheme – Requirements for bodies certifying adventure activity operators’ safety management systems.

Benefits

The scheme is designed to give confidence that an adventure activity operator that is permitted under the Regulations to provide adventure activities is complying with the standards that have been specified by WorkSafe New Zealand to reduce the risks involved in those activities.

More information

An application pack is available to current accredited bodies through the JAS-ANZ SharePoint portal. If you are a new applicant, please request and complete an application enquiry form; once submitted and assessed JAS-ANZ will contact you with further direction.  For other stakeholders please submit your inquiry through the online feedback form.

There are significant on-line resources available to facilitate certification bodies and adventure activity operators. Importantly these include guidance on interpretation of the Safety Audit Standard and identification of good practice. JAS-ANZ is not responsible for the content of external websites, and accordingly the use of such material may not be considered relevant to accreditation activities.
