The FSSC 22000 certification scheme was developed and is maintained by the Board of Stakeholders of the Foundation for Food Safety Certification, based in the Netherlands. The aim of the Foundation is to provide a certification scheme which has broad acceptance, through adding value to the relationship between the certified food organizations and those around it such as the government, customers and suppliers.
The FSSC 22000 certification scheme pulls together ISO 22000:2005 and the various parts of ISO 22002 as the set of certification criteria, and relies heavily on ISO/TS 22003 as the accreditation criteria – however with some additions for CABs. These additions are documented in the scheme rules published by the Foundation – Food Safety System Certification 22000 (FSSC 22000) – Certification scheme for food safety systems in compliance with ISO 22000: 2005 and Technical specifications for sector PRPs.
The FSSC 22000 certification scheme has gained full recognition through the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
Applicant CABs will need to comply with Food Safety System Certification 22000 (FSSC 22000) – Certification scheme for food safety systems in compliance with ISO 22000:2005 and Technical specifications for sector PRPs.
As a management systems scheme, applicants also need to comply with ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 – Conformity Assessment – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems, Part 1: Requirements.
- Provides a framework for effectively managing an organisation's food safety responsibilities.
- Demonstrates that a company has a robust food safety management system in place that meets the requirements of customers and consumers.
