The scheme is intended for those conformity assessment bodies that wish to certify organisations to AS/NZS ISO 14001 Environmental management systems - Requirements with guidance for use. Certification under this scheme helps organisations minimise the harmful effects of their activities on the environment, meet legal environmental requirements, and achieve continual improvement of their environmental performance.
ISO 14001 is aligned with other management systems standards such as ISO 9001, allowing organisations to easily integrate systems.
As a management systems scheme, applicant CABs will need to comply with ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 – Conformity Assessment – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems. In addition, they will need to meet the competence requirements specified in ISO/IEC 17021-2 - Conformity assessment - Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems - Part 2: Competence requirements for auditing and certification of environmental management systems.
- Promotes effective and efficient environmental management and provides a framework for an effective environmental management system for organisations.
